Memorial Museum and Reserve “Schelykovo”

MEMORIAL MUSEUM AND RESERVE “SCHELYKOVO” duration: 4 hours (2 hours for the journey + 2 hours for the excursion) – 1,000 roubles per person (including transport expenses)

Memorial Museum and Reserve “Schelykovo” was a family estate of the prominent Russian playwright, the founder of the national school of drama, who often depicted Kostroma and flamboyant images of its people, Alexander Ostrovsky. It is open all year round. The manor has original interior, furniture and personal belongings of Alexander Nikolayevich and members of his family.

The visitors are offered several programs, among the most interesting ones are the quest to investigate the mysteries of the old house, some interactive programs and workshops with Snegurochka (for kids), old-times get-togethers in Sobolev’s house in the village of Nikola-Berezhki.

Interactive program “At the Manor” – 3.5 hours (1.5 hours for the excursion + 2 hours for the journey) – 800 roubles per person (including transport expenses)

You will take a sightseeing walk around the estate park to enjoy the beautiful views. You will also learn what a real Russian estate was like and how the owners organized their life in harmony with the nature.  

A hospitable Hostess of the House will greet you at the threshold of the house. She will show you the interior of the rooms and tell you about what kids and adults did in a nobleman’s family. There will also be a governess who will teach you some basics of good manners. 

You will have some fun of the nobility in the open air. In case the weather is bad the games will be substituted with a workshop of serving tea on the terrace of the house.

Interactive program “A Village Get-together” - 3 hours (45 minutes for the excursion + 2 hours for the journey) – 700 roubles per person (including transport expenses)

“Posidelki”, or a get-together, is a meeting of the village young people in the evenings in autumn and winter. Under the pretence of doing some work like sewing or spinning the young got together to chat, have fun and sing.

When you find yourself in a village house at a get-together you will do some embroidering or spinning and try to lure some boys in the house, if you are a girl. If you are a boy, you will have a chance to demonstrate how strong, adroit and smart you are. Everyone will have fun to their own taste – songs, dances, pranks and even kissing games!
